It is believed that low levels of serotonin may be responsible for the primitive emotion of fear (anxiety) and depression. However, the million dollar question that has the experts scratching their heads, is it depression/anxiety that causes a lowering of Serotonin or is the low levels of Serotonin that influences depression/anxiety.
The medical model excludes environmental factors which can trigger anxiety or depression, whereas the psychological model focuses on the environmental triggers that are responsible for fear and depression.
Evolution has built these to emotions in our species and also seems to be present in other species as well. They are there to protect us, the problem is when both persist in absence of the environment. It is important to know that feelings of depression and anxiety are a normal response to the environmental stimulus. When it becomes an issue is when it persists for a long time and is disproportional to the actual stimulus and it negatively affects your day to day life.
As a society, we want quick fixes and the medical model does provide that quick fix, but for some, that quick fix may come with serious consequences. The reseason why is that no two people have the same bio-chemical-electro configuration. So what works for one person may have an adverse effect on another person.
As the person in the interview said, to paraphrase when it comes to drugs therapy use extreme caution, follow the directions, and consult with a medical professional if there is any adverse reaction to the prescription. Remember no two people are wired the same.
